Madras (Chennai) is the fourth largest city in India  - outranked by Delhi , Bombay and Calcutta and the capital of Tamilnadu State. The city, which is divided into two by the Cooum river, sprawls over 68 square miles (expanding faster than ever !), is located on a 17 km stretch of the Coromandel coast with fewer tall buildings than any of the other four metros. The welcome sense of spaciousness is enhanced by Madras's waterfront on the Bay of Bengal, one of the world's largest and most attractive beaches set in the heart of a city, unspoiled and peaceful.  Popularly regarded as the 'Gateway to the South', Chennai represents a culture that is distinctly different from that of northern India. Music, dance and all other art forms of the South are cherished and nurtured in this city which, though industrialised, continues to be traditional and conventional in many ways.

Objectives:   The main objective of this project is to contribute towards the effective planning and management of natural resources of the region. It aims to develop an information network for wide dissemination of the output of the project using a multi-media training tool and develop institutional capabilities in the developing countries.
