Getting Started

To start using the RiskWare system, you must have a user or login name and a password on an appropriate machine where the system is installed or accessible (see: System Installation in the RiskWare Reference Manual.

Once logged in, change your working directory to the RiskWare project directory. You may want to create a shell alias for this if you do this frequently and the path name is complicated. For example, you could (if you use the C-shell (csh), type alias RISK'cd /mnt/projects/RiskWare' assuming that the latter is the proper pathname.

Ask your system administrator if you are not sure.

To make this alias permanent, add the correct line to you shell startup script .cshrc. To make this work immediately, you will have to source the .cshrc file: source .cshrc (which assumes that your home directory is your present working directory. More generally, you can type source ~/.cshrc which will find your home directory.

At you next login, this will be executed automatically; then all you need to type to get to the RiskWare project directory is RISK or whatever alias you choose.

Verify that your are in the proper directory: type pwd; the system should now display the name of the proper directory:

     host% pwd
You are now ready to run the program.

To start the RiskWare system, just type the name of the executable program; this, by default (and unless somebody changed that) would be RISKsun5, RISKibm, RISKhp or RISKlnx depending on the platform you are using.

If you are not sure what the name of the executable program is on your system, try ls -l, which will display the contents of the current directory and indicate the type of files you have there:

     % ls -l
     total 276502
    36992 -rwxrwxr-x 1 user group 27901952 Mar 13 15:58 RISKsun5*
        4 -rw-rw-r-- 1 user group 1039 Dec 18 08:40 CONFIG
        2 drwxrwxr-x 2 user group 512 Oct 1 09:45 Doc/
        2 drwxrwxr-x 17 user group 1024 Mar 2 17:02 data/
